Timesdo, United States. – Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will require all passengers over the age of 18 to present a REAL ID-compliant identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
This measure follows regulations established after the events of September 11, 2001, aiming to enhance national security by standardizing driver’s licenses and other identification documents.
According to the DHS, federal agencies will not be able to accept IDs issued by states that do not meet the required standards.
What documents will be valid for travel within the U.S.?
REAL ID-compliant identifications feature a star in the upper right corner. However, the TSA will also accept other documents for domestic flights, including:
- U.S. passports
- Passport cards
- Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL)
- Permanent resident cards (Green Card)
- Transportation worker credentials
- Trusted traveler program cards (Global Entry, SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST)
To avoid issues at security checkpoints, travelers are advised to verify their ID’s validity in advance on the TSA website.
The REAL ID Act aims to prevent fraud and enhance national security since its approval in 2005.
How to obtain a REAL ID?
Citizens must visit their state’s driver’s license agency and present the following documents:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- Two proofs of residency
- Proof of legal status in the U.S.
Each state may have additional requirements, so it is recommended to check with the relevant authority before proceeding with the application.
Minors and REAL ID
The regulation does not require minors to present a REAL ID for domestic flights, though some airlines may request additional documentation.
Parents are advised to check specific requirements with the airline before traveling.
States that issue Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL)
Some states have opted to issue Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL) as an alternative to REAL ID. The states offering this option are:
- Washington
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- New York
- Vermont
These credentials have additional security features and can be used as proof of citizenship at certain border crossings. However, they do not replace a passport for international air travel.
Passengers must ensure they have a valid ID before May 7, 2025. If they do not have a REAL ID, obtaining a passport or an enhanced license is recommended as an alternative to avoid issues at airports or federal facilities.
