Dallas, Texas. Southwest Airlines announced changes to its baggage policy and fare structure, effective May 28, 2025.
The airline, known for allowing two checked bags at no cost, will apply fees to some passengers.
A-List Preferred members and Business Select travelers will continue to enjoy two free checked bags.
A-List members and other selected customers will retain one free checked bag.
However, those without status in the Rapid Rewards program will have to pay for their first and second checked bags, depending on weight and size.
The measure aims to attract new customer segments and improve the airline’s profitability.
Additionally, Southwest will introduce a new Basic fare category for more economical tickets.
The changes also include adjustments to the Rapid Rewards program for earning points based on fare type.
