Timesdo. Lumberton, New Jersey. The political landscape in Lumberton took an unexpected turn as Mayor Gina LaPlaca was arrested following allegations of a hit-and-run incident on St. Patrick’s Day with her son in the vehicle. The situation escalated when authorities charged her with child endangerment, reckless driving, and operating under the influence, raising concerns about her fitness for public office amid a history of legal entanglements.

The controversial leader, who recently stepped down as Neptune Township administrator to avoid termination, now faces multiple charges, including endangering the welfare of a child, cruelty and neglect, and driving violations.

Authorities allege that LaPlaca struck another vehicle in Mount Laurel before fleeing the scene. A Lumberton officer, previously hired by LaPlaca, was dispatched to her residence, where she was taken into custody. Official records indicate that she was also charged with possessing an open alcohol container or unsealed cannabis in her car, careless and reckless driving, and driving with an expired license.

This latest arrest follows a pattern of past legal disputes involving LaPlaca. In 2023, while serving as deputy mayor, she was arrested for an altercation with her husband, Jason Carty, a well-known political activist.

Although Carty later accepted responsibility, leading to the dismissal of charges against LaPlaca, the incident fueled ongoing public scrutiny of her personal and professional life. Records also reveal a 2017 police report documenting an incident in which LaPlaca allegedly returned home intoxicated, sparking an argument with Carty, then her boyfriend. No formal charges were filed at the time.

Further controversy followed her recent outburst at a Mount Holly Fire Commission meeting, where she was escorted out by officials. Despite these setbacks, LaPlaca’s past political ambitions remain notable. A former Assembly staffer and lobbyist, she was the Democratic nominee for State Assembly in the 8th district in 2019, signaling her longstanding involvement in public affairs.

As news of her arrest spread, Carty released a statement urging the public to show compassion, acknowledging LaPlaca’s struggles with addiction and emphasizing her commitment to seeking help. He dismissed political attacks against her, highlighting her dedication to the community and the impact of negative discourse on their family.

Authorities have yet to provide further details on LaPlaca’s legal proceedings, leaving the future of her political career uncertain as the case unfolds.
