Timesdo, New York – Luigi Mangione, accused of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is requesting a laptop while he remains in jail, awaiting trial on charges of murder and terrorism. In a motion filed on Monday, Mangione’s attorneys asked for a device with limited access, without internet connection or the ability to run video games or movies, in order to review thousands of documents and video recordings related to his case.

The court was informed that the laptop would allow Mangione to study more than 15,000 pages of documents and thousands of hours of video provided by the prosecution as part of the evidence, which Mangione’s attorneys argue they do not have enough time to review properly during legal visits. The request comes amid formal charges against Mangione, 26, who faces both a state trial and a federal case that could result in the death penalty.

Despite the proposal, the Manhattan district attorney’s office expressed concerns, mentioning that some witnesses have been subject to threats related to the case. However, Mangione’s defense team asserted that there is no connection between their client and the alleged intimidation. The controversy has sparked mixed reactions, with some defending the accused’s right to adequately prepare his defense, while others criticize the possible use of the laptop in a high-security context.

Mangione, a computer science graduate from the University of Maryland and a member of a real estate family, was arrested in Pennsylvania shortly after Thompson’s murder in December, outside a Manhattan hotel. This tragic event, which occurred just before a UnitedHealthcare investor conference, left a mark on the corporate world, prompting immediate changes in several insurers’ workplace practices.

The case, which has polarized public opinion, continues to gain attention. While some express support for the accused, who has issued a statement thanking his followers, others reject what they see as a glorification of ideological violence. Mangione also faces charges of illegal gun possession in Pennsylvania, as his defense prepares its strategy for this high-profile legal battle.
